The journey

Kumbakonam is the natural base for the nine-temple Navagraha circuit, which is a genuinely demanding two days of driving between shrines that each close in the middle of the day. Guests doing the full circuit almost always take the car for the duration rather than transfer-by-transfer; the chauffeur knows the closing times, which matters more than the distances.
