The journey
Chettinad is not really one place — it is a scatter of villages full of merchant mansions built on nineteenth-century Burmese and Malayan trade, most of them still privately owned and a few converted to hotels. The driving between them is part of the point. Guests staying at one of the heritage properties usually keep the car on an hourly basis for the duration.
