The journey
Velankanni draws pilgrims from across South and South-East Asia, and a large share of them land at Trichy. The last stretch runs along the coast and the air changes noticeably. Families travelling for the September festival should book well ahead — accommodation and roads both tighten, and we cap how many cars we commit to that fortnight so that the ones we do commit actually arrive.
